From Paint Points to Bright Spots: BISTU Conquers the Last-mile Problem in Student Service

By Thu, 18 Apr 2024 GMT

Beijing, 18th April 2024 (BISTU)--- Li He, a student supervisor of Computer Science School at BISTU, is still on duty in Halls of Residence when the clock strikes eleven at night. As a halls-based student supervisor, Li said he enjoys the time with students. “It is the value of being a student supervisor.” A sense of satisfaction and worth flows through him as he sees the trust on students’ faces.

Shi Liru, a new halls-based student supervisor of School of Information and Communication Engineering, also enjoys such joyful moments. BISTU suggests that new student supervisors should work as halls-based supervisors for a year. Still vivid in her memory is the two hours talk with a student at the one-stop service center of Shahe Campus. The student often ignores notices or messages sent to him and is a tad obsessed with computer games. After surveys she finds that he has difficulty with adapting to college life. She actively contacts him, encourages him, and helps him analyze pros and cons of matters. In the end, his confidence comes back and he starts to enjoy college life.

Zhang Jingrui from School of Economics and Management and Zhang Hongrui from School of Information Management are also among the outstanding halls-based student supervisors. Their original aspiration is to support growth of students with immersion education and their mission is to provide students with last-mile service in ideological and political education. The office hours are usually from eight am to five pm. However, they often work much longer than that. Students would become bewildered with learning, faiths, employment, or everyday life. And there are some unexpected events, e.g., sending students to hospital emergency at night, handing some accidents…… We are here whenever students need us. They said without any hesitance. And they are offered a number of lovely nicknames such as a barrel of laughs, we-can-count-on-her, currier for us, etc. Each of the nicknames is reflecting the trust and love from students.

Halls-based student supervisors are a move of the University in exploring how to provide students with better service in the one-stop student community. The one-stop student community of BISTU, initiated in June 2023, is in line with the requirements of Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipal Education Commission. With digital empowerment and the immersion-style education, the student community has been built into a four-in-one community, i.e., a community of values, growth, governance, and culture. And the students' all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic grounding is comprehensively fostered.

BISTU sets up a working group headed by Chairman Xie Jiangling of University Council and President Guo Fu to promote student service in a high-quality manner. The Group visited Beijing University of Technology and Harbin Engineering University for communication purpose and organized seminars for discussions among students. Under the context that modernization of university governance should be promoted, student community has become an important place for talent cultivation. The one-stop student community would provide solutions to pain points of faculty and students. Halls of residence are no longer places of residence. They have become a new field where friendship is fostered, mutual help promoted, and ideological and political education innovated. Director Zhang Jingbo of Students Affairs Office said.

Students are attracted by the digitized and intelligent facilities and amazed at the warm, effective services. The day when the one-stop student service center was officially launched saw quite some students and faculty and staff. On the day, Zhang Yixuan, a BISTU student who was there to replace her youth league member card, commented that we are not confined with a fixed schedule and I received tailored services here. Ren Ruoshui of Information and Network Center said that the Center offered students with real conveniences. As of now, interconnectivity has been achieved between Shahe Campus and Xiaoying Campus. And the one-student student community of BISTU was assessed in 2023 as one of the top ten model projects in this regard among Beijing-based universities.

Room 407 of student development center at Shahe Campus saw Cai Rong, a faculty of BISTU Psychological Health Center, is guiding students to draw a profile of himself or herself. As the profiles are completed, students obtain a clearer understanding of themselves and become more motivated and confident. Guo Fangfang of Psychological Health Center said that it is one of the activities for the one-stop student community. A five-in-one working system incorporating education and learning, counseling service, regular polls, preventions, and platform-based guarantee has been established to help students with four difficulties, i.e., difficulties in learning, psychological development, interpersonal communication, and financial arrangement. Altogether 13 tailored counseling sessions have been arranged for various groups of students to support their growth. Guo Fangfang said.

More efforts would be invested in building up the one-stop student community at BISTU. Class 2001 of Information and Communication Engineering School stood out from a number of classes recommended by 55 Beijing-based universities and was granted the honor Best Ten Classes in Beijing in the end of 2023. It is the reflection of the achievements in one-stop student community.

Additionally, activities such as Meeting with the Chairman, President Café, peer education, and art and cultural events are also organized to provide support with building up the one-stop student community at BISTU.

The future focus would be laid on the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education to build a campus of calmness, warmth, and vitality. We are aiming to build the one-stop student community into a place for party building, an immersion education field for ideological and political education, and a warm home for students growth. Zhang Jingbo said.
