A Brief Introduction to Graduate Education

 

The graduate education at BISTU, beginning from 1981, was formally authorized to award master’s degrees in 1993. Its disciplines have been well-organized and built up into a rational and integrated system. Domestically, it ranks high in such fields as Electronic Information, Modern Manufacturing, Optical-Electronic-Machinery Integration, Knowledge Management, Technical Economic, etc.. 

BISTU graduate programs have developed dramatically in recent years, in quality and quantity as well. In 2010, the university was authorized to recommend current graduate students for postgraduate programs without taking entrance exams. At present, there are 1,100 postgraduate students registered in BISTU, and 46 in joint doctoral programs with other universities or scientific research institutions. The master’s programs have 173 supervisory committee members from BISTU and 81 from other institutes; doctoral programs have 19 supervisory committee members. 

The master’s degrees are offered in 14 primary disciplines and 36 secondary disciplines. Non-academic master’s degrees are offered in 8 fields of two disciplines. 

The 14 primary disciplines include: Mechanical Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Optical Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Applied Economics, Electrical Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, and Marxist Theory. 

The two disciplines for non-academic master’s degrees are Engineering and Business Administration. The field of Engineering covers: Mechanical Engineering, Instrument and Meter Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Engineering, Logistics Engineering and Business Administration. 

Three disciplines are top-ranked in Beijing municipal area, and they are Mechatronic Engineering, Precision Instruments and Machinery, Technology Economics and Management. 

Nine disciplines are high-priority ones, which are: Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Measurement Techniques & Measuring Instruments, Signal and Information Processing, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Detection Technology and Automatic Equipment, Computer Application Technology, Management Science and Engineering, and Business Administration.
