BISTU libraries on three campuses (Xiaoying, Jianxiangqiao, and Qinghe) provide indispensable support to study, teaching, and research for both faculty and students. In an average week the reading rooms are open approximately 86 hours.
Taking into consideration the needs of academic development as well as teaching and research at BISTU, the libraries give priority to developing infrastructure in specific subjects while also ensuring a proper investment in fields that do not require urgent attention. Currently, BISTU libraries hold a collection of more than 980 thousand print books, 1.78 million e-books, 3,907 audio and video resources, 1827 print journals in both Chinese and foreign languages, and 163 newspapers. The libraries give access to over 50 major academic databases offered by CNKI, Wanfang Data, EI, CPCI, IEL, Science Direct, Springer, SPIE, Emerald, ASME, and ACM. Over the years, the university libraries have built up a comprehensive academic library and information system which finds its strengths in mechanical engineering, electronic information engineering, computer science, and business administration, and in the meantime encompasses other fields including science, engineering, and management to economics, humanities, and law. Through the campus network, BISTU’s extensive digital resources are available 24-7 to their readers.
In recent years, BISTU libraries have accelerated their transformation from the traditional type to the modern type, digitizing almost all the print volumes of the library collection. BISTU libraries have also ushered in a cataloging system for western-language journals through indigenous R&D, thus realizing the goal of the central management and showcasing of western-language journals.
The libraries have joined major alliances, including BALIS (Beijing Academic Library and Information System), CASHL (China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library), and CALIS (China Academic Library & Information System) to pool and share educational resources.
In addition to providing a regular lending service, BISTU libraries also offer an array of programs that feature BARA (Borrow Anywhere Return Anywhere), ILL (Interlibrary Loan), document delivery, professional consultations, citation index search, and readers’ workshops, helping library users to hone their skills in information retrieval. The libraries publish the BISTU Library Newsletter on a regular basis, aiming to establish a closer relationship with the reader community and to steadily improve their overall service quality and standards.
